Over and Over Again Russian Doll

We can say that Russian Doll is a show about a lot of dissimilar things. Beginning and foremost, it's a evidence about a jaded-yet-charismatic woman named Nadia Vulvokov, played past he effortlessly-charming Natasha Lyonne. It'southward also a show about, for all of its adept and bad, New York Urban center. It'south a bear witness about friendship, family, history, self-awareness, knowing your place in the world, and even learning to be a better person through lived experience. It's a show about all of these things. Just for only a few moments lets look across that—because more than anything else, Russian Doll is a prove about vibes.

It's a show that makes you lot feel a certain way when you spotter it. Function of that is because Lyonne and the residuum of Russian Doll'southward cast of characters are merely and then charming and watchable. But some other part is considering the show'due south music so perfectly captures exactly the mood and feeling of any given moment. If y'all're feeling happy, there'southward usually a song that tin capture that. If you lot're feeling shitty, well, there's as well going to exist a vocal that can capture that. And if you're stuck in a potentially-eternal fourth dimension loop, depending on who y'all are, at that place'due south going to be a song that can capture that too.

Season two of Russian Doll (mostly) forgoes the Time Loop stuff, with a whole agglomeration of Back to the Future-esque time travel taking its place. And that means going decades back, and finding the right songs, and, thus, creating the correct vibes, for each of those decades, and moments within those decades, likewise. And Russian Doll again does it wonderfully.

The person most involved in making those decisions, and finding those vibes, is music supervisor Brienne Rose, who spoke with Men's Health to explicate some of the thought process that went into picking the season's music.

MH: What went into choosing the music for Russian Doll Season two?

BR: The new season tackles so many fascinating themes; time travel and the time space continuum, existential dread, epigenetics, habit, ghosts of the past… then it felt of import to mirror some of those themes in the music. We're always aiming to capture the Russian Doll/Nadia/ New York of it all, merely this season expands into new fourth dimension periods and new places, and so we needed to weave those into our dark, complex, cognitive Russian Doll sounds in new means. We wanted to expand the audio of the universe to include a timelessness that also supports our characters.

How did you lot work with Natasha to option out specific music choices for specific moments?

Natasha has such a vast understanding of music and is and then invested in the cohesion of the Russian Doll Earth (both visually and audibly, making certain it all works together), that it makes this process very exciting and extremely thoughtful. Every song choice is deliberate, even the very groundwork pieces; they all take a purpose of informing the scene or the earth. Each ane has meaning. That doesn't always mean lyrically—sometimes it tin can be a rhythmic element.

What would y'all say is the unifying theme of the music in Season 2?

Certainly playing with themes of time; timelessness, fourth dimension identifying. Artists like Bauhaus and Depeche Mode fit squarely into our nighttime, gothy, cerebral world. Other pieces like The Aisle Cats, Piddling Anthony and the Imperials play a fun juxtaposition, simply they all inform the overall audio, which encapsulates song and artist that are mind bending, against, and pursue a deep examination of humanity.

Belatedly in the season, we finally hear "Gotta Get Up" again. How important was it for that story to come dorsum in a big way in Flavour ii?

So important! This is where the story comes back around to its roots from Flavor 1, and since that vocal was our reset push reach time in the first season, it became crucial for the storytelling, to be able to take united states back to this moment and tie the pieces together. We beloved Harry!

And then without farther ado, here is a full list of all the era-spanning, fourth dimension-traveling, vibe-tastic songs of Russian Doll Season 2.
